Statement of the Foreign Ministry regarding the emergency session of the UN Security Council

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia issued a statement regarding the urgent session of the UN Security Council.

The statement specifically says: "During the urgent session of the UN Security Council convened at the request of the Republic of Armenia on August 16, it was once again recorded that international partners, despite the false propaganda carried out by Azerbaijan, are clearly aware of the fact of the grave humanitarian situation in Nagorno Karabakh and the importance of addressing it. The assessments and messages addressed to Azerbaijan during the second discussion in the format of the UN Security Council essentially complemented the clear positions expressed by various governments, international structures, and human rights organizations.

Remarkable were the speeches of the member states and the representative of the EU that Azerbaijan is obliged to eliminate the illegal blocking of the Lachin Corridor in accordance with the 2020 the tripartite declaration of November 9 and the legally binding decisions of the UN International Court of Justice of February 22 and July 6. It was clearly emphasized that the severe humanitarian situation created for the population of Nagorno-Karabakh as a result of the blockade, which has been going on for more than eight months, should be eliminated.

It is clear that Azerbaijan continues to distort the calls of the international community, to seek false and untrue pretexts to not implement its obligations and, prolonging the humanitarian crisis, including ethnically cleansing the indigenous people of Nagorno-Karabakh through starvation. Moreover, Azerbaijan tries to manipulate any "balanced" approach of international actors, interpreting it as a concession to the continuation of its adopted policy.

We emphasize the urgency of using all available international tools to eliminate the humanitarian crisis in NK and to restore uninterrupted movement in both directions through the Lachin Corridor and ensure unimpeded access of international humanitarian organizations in NK.

The RA Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highly appreciating the principled and fair positions of the UN Security Council member states committed to their mandate to contribute to international security and peace, will continue to work on various platforms, including the UN Security Council, by taking consistent steps to unblock the Lachin Corridor and the Nagorno-Karabakh In the direction of overcoming the humanitarian crisis in Karabakh".
