Aliyev makes post-war corrections in the government system
Extraordinary parliamentary elections will be held in Azerbaijan in September of this year. Political analyst Vardan Balyan notes that there are essentially no internal political objective reasons for holding elections.
"The Yeni Azerbaijan/New Azerbaijan party led by Aliyev had an absolute majority in the now-dissolved parliament: 72 of the 125 deputies represented the political force led by Ilham Aliyev, who won the last extraordinary presidential elections. The current developments in some way resemble the war year 2020. Let me remind you that in November 2019, the deputies of the "New Azerbaijan" party initiated the process of early termination of the powers of the Mejlis, as a result of which, on December 2, the Milli Mejlis adopted a relevant decision with an absolute majority of votes. On December 7, the CEC of that country started the process of extraordinary parliamentary elections, the voting took place already on February 8, 2020, months before the 44-day war. As much as we don't want to draw parallels with the current situation, they are obvious.
The fact that with these elections Aliyev is making post-war corrections in the government system is beyond doubt and indisputable. Only the fact that 41 out of the current 72 government deputies, most likely, will not be represented in the newly elected parliament, is more than a telling fact in itself.
The second interesting record is that the presidential political force in the new parliament will probably be represented by deputies personally loyal to Ilham and Mehriban Aliyev. Different family-clan and territorial-clan groupings in the field of state administration in Azerbaijan for decades are simply pushed out of politics for good before the future transfer of power. Due to these and many other circumstances, I think there is a need to pay more attention to the observable political processes in Azerbaijan," he wrote.
