In recent years, Azerbaijan's military aggression has led to serious environmental problems in the region. According to "Armenpress", this was stated by Yeghishe Kirakosyan, RA representative for International Legal Affairs, during the first procedural session of the arbitration proceedings between Armenia and Azerbaijan on the basis of the Bern Convention on the Protection of European Wildlife and Natural Environment.

The hearing took place at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague.

According to Yeghishe Kirakosyan, Armenia's trajectory in the field of environmental protection speaks for itself. Armenia has repeatedly reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of wild flora and fauna and the natural environment in the region, including through its close cooperation with the Standing Committee of the Berne Convention.

Meanwhile, Azerbaijan seems to be sticking to its cynical strategy of using so-called "environmental concerns" as a tool for political reasons. In recent years, Azerbaijan's military aggression has led to serious environmental problems in the region, destroying forests, polluting land and water resources, including depleting the resources of the Sarsang reservoir. The flora and fauna of Nagorno-Karabakh is also threatened by Azerbaijan's incessant demolition and construction activities aimed at preventing the return of ethnic Armenians to their homeland.

Armenia will seek to reaffirm its position and protect its interests within the framework of this arbitration proceeding, disputing Azerbaijan's groundless claims, and at the appropriate stage of the proceedings presenting its own claims against Azerbaijan regarding the latter's continuous violation of its environmental obligations," said the representative of the Republic of Armenia on International Legal Affairs.
