The USA is interested in Turkey and the Republic of Baku having direct contact with the territory of the Republic of Armenia. Political scientist Hrant Mikayelyan expressed this point of view in a conversation with "Sputnik Armenia", commenting on the statement of US Assistant Secretary of State James O'Brien about the "Zangezur Corridor".

James O'Brien, speaking about the "Zangezur Corridor" proposed by Baku, said in an interview with "Azatutuyn". "We usually talk about it as a trade route, very similar to the Armenian idea of the "Crossroads of Peace". Now there are already routes where tunnels are dug, there are route lines, so it makes sense to start by looking at them. But it is possible that several routes will appear, which will provide that some of the goods will go through Armenia to Georgia, while others will go through the territory of Turkey. And we will start developing a network of roads, not just one route. So this is a broad concept that we support."

According to Hrant Mikayelyan, unlike the Russian Federation, which has always expressed a "vague" position regarding the project, because it is not on its agenda, the USA has a strategic interest in this project.

"In order for Turkey and the West to increase their influence in Central Asia, they should ensure a direct connection between the Caspian Sea and Turkey. And the so-called "Zangezur Corridor" is considered as a means for this. And here, yes, the USA has an interest in the Republic of Baku and Turkey having direct contact with the territory of Armenia," said the political scientist.

As for why the US was opposing the idea of the corridor until now, according to Mikayelyan, it is very clear: the US did not want the Russian border guard troops to be stationed there. Now, when that issue is closed, Washington openly expresses its attitude towards "Zangezur Corridor".
