The world cannot allow Lebanon to become another Gaza. Guterres

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said yesterday that it is necessary to prevent the expansion of the conflict in the Middle East, otherwise Lebanon could become another Gaza.

He announced this in a conversation with journalists at the UN headquarters in New York. Guterres expressed deep concern about the clashes and "military rhetoric" between Israel and Lebanon-based Hezbollah.

“One ill-advised step, one miscalculation, and unimaginable disaster can ensue. Let's make it clear that the people of the region and the world cannot allow Lebanon to become another Gaza," Guterres said.

He called on the parties to urgently reaffirm the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution No. 1701 and immediately cease hostilities.

Resolution No. 1701, passed in 2006, provides for a cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, and the establishment of a demilitarized zone.
