The date of Erdogan-Assad meeting will be announced soon. Putin's special envoy to Syria

The special envoy of the President of the Russian Federation in Syria, Alexander Lavrentev, stated that intensive work is currently being done to settle the relations between Syria and Turkey and clarify the date of the meeting between the presidents of the two countries. According to "Detq", Lavrentev said this in an interview with the Arabic TV channel "Al Arabiya".

The Russian envoy emphasized that there are difficulties related to the normalization of relations between Ankara and Damascus, including the Turkish military presence in the Syrian territory.

Referring to the reopening of international roads in the territory of Syria, Lavrentev said that work in this direction is also ongoing. According to him, Turkey has undertaken to withdraw its armed groups 6 kilometers from the M-4 highway.

In addition, the special envoy of the Russian President informed that some difficulties are related to the relations between the groups controlling the mentioned areas of Turkey and Syria and that work is quite complicated.

Relations between Turkey and Syria have been strained since 2011, when the civil war began in Syria, where Erdogan, who previously had quite warm relations with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, began supporting armed groups fighting against him. However, especially thanks to the support of Russia and Iran, Assad managed to maintain his power and regain control over most of the country's territories.

Negotiations on the normalization of relations between Syria and Turkey have been started since 2021, but the main obstacle in this matter is that the Syrian side requires Turkey to withdraw its troops from the territory of Syria, while Erdogan does not intend to comply with this demand, claiming that its implementation will create a security threat for Turkey.
