The adviser of the supreme leader of Iran said that the road from Azerbaijan to Nakhichevan will divide Armenia into two parts

The senior adviser on international issues of the supreme leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ali Akbar Velayati, stated that Iran is against the establishment of a connection between Turkey and Azerbaijan. According to "Detq", Velayati mentioned this in his article published by the Iranian "Tasnim" news agency.

According to Velayati, those who are against the creation of such a connection say that if there will be a facilitation of relations between Azerbaijan and Nakhichevan, then there is no need for the neighbors to occupy a significant part of the Armenian territory. According to him, all these possibilities, such as gas transmission, electricity flow, transit route, etc., can be easily made available without violating Armenia's sovereignty.

The adviser of the supreme leader of Iran drew attention to the fact that the experts came to the conclusion that the basis of these extensive ties connecting Nakhichevan with Azerbaijan is the tendency to first divide Armenia into two parts, and secondly to divide Iran and Armenia, cutting the connection that started dates back to the Achaemenian and Parthian Empires. The latter also noted that in that case, Iran's connection with the outside world will be limited, and the country will have 14 neighbors instead of 15, besides, Iran's free connection with the North Caucasus, Russia and the European continent will be disrupted.

The Iranian official emphasized that any change in regional borders will cause long-term tension, and the most worrisome will be the presence of foreign countries on the border. He also said that the Russian side should be very careful and know that any small negligence in the South Caucasus will make it a place of invasion and competition between different countries and malicious parties that will attack the interests of Russia and the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has a principled position that changes in the borders of regional countries are unacceptable for Tehran. This applies especially to the Armenian-Iranian border, in particular to the so-called Zangezur Corridor, and somewhat curbs the aspirations of the Turkish-Azerbaijan alliance.
