All defense ministers of Armenia from 1918 to today

The history of the Armenian army dates back thousands of years. At the end of the 20th century, the invincible Armenian people acquired and formed a National Army. The defense ministers of RA deserve mention in the field of army building.

We present to you all the heads of the RA Ministry of Defense.

1. Hovhannes Hakhverdyan (1873-1931), was the first Minister of Defense of the Republic of Armenia, at that time, the Minister of Defense in the government of Prime Minister Hovhannes Kajaznu (06.07.1918-08.07.1919).
2. Kristapor Araratyan (1876-1937) was the second military minister of the Republic of Armenia in the government of Prime Minister Alexander Khatisyan (07.08.1919-05.05.1920).
3. Ruben Ter-Minasyan (1882-1951) was the third military minister of the Republic of Armenia in the Bureau-government of Prime Minister Hamo Ohanjanyan (05.05.1920-23.11.1920).
4. Drastamat Kanayan (1884-1956), was the last military minister of the Republic of Armenia in the government of Prime Minister Simon Vratsyan (November 24, 1920-December 2, 1920).
5. Alexander Myasnikyan (1886-1925), after the Sovietization of Armenia, in January 1921, Alexander Myasnikyan was appointed the first chairman (prime minister) of the People's Committee of the Armenian SSR and People's Committee of Military Affairs.
6. Hayk Medyyants (1887-1937), shortly before Soviet Armenia joined the USSR in 1922, Guy was a military People's Commissar.
7. Vazgen Sargsyan (1959-1999), Minister of Defense of the Republic of Armenia during the presidencies of Levon Ter-Petrosyan and Robert Kocharyan.
8. Vazgen Manukyan was the Acting Minister of Defense from October 20, 1992 to August 21, 1993 and State Minister coordinating defense issues from September 1992 to August 1993, during the presidency of President Levon Ter-Petrosyan.
9. Serzh Sargsyan held the post of Minister of Defense during the presidencies of Levon Ter-Petrosyan and Robert Kocharyan, from August 1993 to July 1995 and from 2000 to 2007, respectively.
10. Vagharshak Harutyunyan held the position of Minister of Defense (1999-2000) during the presidency of Robert Kocharyan.
11. Mikayel Harutyunyan was appointed as the Minister of Defense in 2007. from April 25 to April 2008 during the presidency of Robert Kocharyan.
12. Seyran Ohanyan held the position of Minister of Defense from April 14, 2008 to September 9, 2016.
13. Vigen Sargsyan was the Minister of Defense from October 3, 2016 to May 11, 2018.
14. Davit Tonoyan held the position of Minister of Defense from May 11, 2018 to 2020.
15. Vagharshak Harutyunyan took the position of Minister of Defense in 2020. from November 20 to 2021.
16. Arshak Karapetyan took the position of Minister of Defense on August 2, 2021. Retired on November 15, 2021.

Suren Papikyan was appointed as the Minister of Defense on November 15, 2021.
