The United States and Turkey have agreed on a new system of secondary sanctions

Washington and Ankara agreed on the issue of secondary sanctions.

According to this agreement, foreign companies cooperating with Russian companies will be subject to sanctions.

In the past, the USA immediately imposed secondary sanctions against a number of Turkish companies that carried out trade activities with Russia.

According to the new agreement, the US will first notify the Turkish side about the activities of suspicious companies. "Turkey should conduct an investigation and inform the US about the results, after which measures will be applied if necessary," Hürriyet newspaper wrote.

In January, it became known that Turkish banks refuse to work with Russian banks, not wanting to be subjected to secondary sanctions by the USA.

Almost all Turkish banks have severed correspondent relations with Russian credit organizations and stopped payments. The situation worsened in December 2023, when the 12th package of sanctions of the European Union came into force, and US President Joe Biden, in turn, ratified the decree of secondary sanctions.

Both documents were adopted in response to the continuation of the Russian war against Ukraine.
