Azerbaijan appealed to the co-chairs of the Nuclear Energy Summit regarding the Metsamor NPP
The representatives of the civil society of Azerbaijan addressed the co-chairs of the inaugural Nuclear Energy Summit, Prime Minister of Belgium Alexandre de Croix and Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi, with an open letter regarding the Metsamor nuclear power plant in Armenia.
The inaugural Nuclear Energy Summit kicked off yesterday in Brussels.
They called on the leadership of the summit to pay attention to, as they defined, "the global danger posed by the nuclear power plant in an emergency state" and to put before the government of Armenia the issue of immediately stopping the operation of the nuclear power plant.
"The Metsamor nuclear power plant, which was built in 1976 in a 9.5-point seismic zone, works with old technologies and is designed for 8-point. It poses a great nuclear threat to Azerbaijan, Turkey, Armenia and the entire region," the statement said.
